Former Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for defrauding more than 20 people between 2014 and 2022 by falsely claiming he had cancer. He admitted 10 counts, with other charges taken into consideration. He obtained €394,127 and $13,000, has repaid €44,200, apologized in court, and said no immediate restitution is possible.
