    Muir seeks support for independent NI environmental watchdog

    NI Agriculture and Environment Minister Andrew Muir proposed an independent environmental protection agency as a non‑departmental body within DAERA. He said he lacks support from all parties and faces tight timelines to pass legislation before the mandate ends. The plan would align Northern Ireland’s environmental governance with arrangements elsewhere in Britain and Ireland, subject to Executive and Assembly approval.
